The Significance of Dhanteras
According to the Bhavishya Purana, performing Dhanteras Puja on this night protects the family from untimely death (Akal Mrityu). Lord Yama, the god of death, is also propitiated on this day through a specific lamp ritual (Yama Deepam) that protects the family's health for the coming year. This dual blessing of wealth AND health makes Dhanteras Puja one of the most complete and powerful pujas in the entire Vedic calendar.
Step-by-Step Dhanteras Puja Process
Sankalp: The family head declares the intention: blessings of wealth, health, and divine protection for the coming year.
Ganesh Puja: Lord Ganesha is invoked for auspicious beginning.
Lakshmi Sthapana: Goddess Lakshmi's idol is ceremonially installed with specific Dhanteras mantras and the Sri Suktam is chanted.
Kubera Puja: Lord Kubera is invoked with the Kubera Gayatri and Moola mantra. New coins and notes are placed at the altar.
Dhanvantari Puja: Lord Dhanvantari is worshipped for family health and protection from illness.
New Purchase Consecration: All new items purchased on Dhanteras, gold ornaments, silver, utensils, vehicles, are brought to the altar and consecrated with specific mantras.
Yama Deepam: A specific lamp ritual performed at the main entrance facing south (Yama's direction) with the prayer for long life for all family members.
Havan: Offerings of lotus seeds, saffron, ghee, and prosperity herbs are made into the sacred fire.
Cash and Locker Puja: The family's safe, locker, or savings box is opened and consecrated, inviting Lakshmi's permanent residence.
Aarti and Prasad: The festival Aarti is performed and prasad is distributed.
