The Story and Significance of Tulsi Vivah

The story of Tulsi Vivah comes from the Padma Purana. Vrinda (later reborn as the Tulsi plant) was the devoted wife of the demon Jalandhar. Her unwavering chastity gave Jalandhar invincibility. To defeat Jalandhar, Lord Vishnu temporarily broke Vrinda's chastity by disguising himself. When Vrinda realized this deception, she cursed Vishnu to become a stone (Shaligram) and herself became the Tulsi plant. The compassionate Vishnu promised that she would always be worshipped alongside him and that no puja to Vishnu would be complete without Tulsi. Tulsi Vivah fulfills this promise.

Performing Tulsi Vivah at home is considered equivalent to marrying off one's own daughter, which is the highest form of Dana (gift) in Hindu tradition. Families who perform this ceremony receive the spiritual merit of conducting a Kanya Vivah.

Step-by-Step Tulsi Vivah Ritual Process

1. Decoration: The Tulsi plant is decorated with a sari, bangles, turmeric, and flowers. The Shaligram or Vishnu idol is dressed as a bridegroom. A sugarcane mandap is erected.
2. Sankalp: The family declares the intention of the Tulsi Vivah and the spiritual merit they seek.
3. Ganesh Puja: Lord Ganesha is worshipped first, as in all ceremonies.
4. Var Puja: The bridegroom (Vishnu/Shaligram) is worshipped with Shodashopachara.
5. Kanya Puja: The bride (Tulsi) is worshipped with specific Tulsi mantras and fragrant offerings.
6. Mangalashtak Recitation: The auspicious wedding verses are chanted.
7. Vivah Ceremony: The complete wedding ceremony is performed including Kanyadan, Hasta Milap, Saptapadi, and Sindoor ritual.
8. Havan: Fire ceremony with wedding-specific offerings.
9. Aarti: Both Tulsi and Vishnu are worshipped with Aarti.
