Pitru Dosh Shanti Puja
There are moments in a family's life when despite doing everything right, things keep going wrong. Careers stagnate inexplicably. Marriages face repeated hurdles. Health problems recur without clear cause. Children are late in arriving. Debts accumulate without reason. When these patterns persist across generations, the Vedic tradition points to one potential cause: Pitru Dosh, the unfulfilled karmic debt owed to deceased ancestors who may not have received proper last rites, who died under unfortunate circumstances, or whose souls remain unsettled.
Pitru Dosh Shanti Puja is the powerful Vedic remedy prescribed in the Garuda Purana, the Vishnu Purana, and the ancient texts of Shraddha Vidhi to settle these ancestral debts. It brings peace to the departed souls, clears the karmic ledger, and releases the family from the shadow of ancestral suffering. Families in Kothrud, Hadapsar, Viman Nagar, and Baner who have performed this puja report a remarkable shift in family fortune and harmony within months.

Understanding Pitru Dosh
In Vedic astrology, Pitru Dosh occurs in the birth chart when Rahu is placed in conjunction with or aspects the Sun, Moon, or the 9th house (the house of ancestors and father). It can also arise from:
Ancestors who died without proper last rites (Antyeshti Samskara)
Family members who died in accidents, suicides, or untimely deaths
Ancestors who suffered from unfulfilled desires or unresolved conflicts
Generations of the family that neglected the Shraddha and Tarpan rituals
Those whose property was wrongfully taken or whose injustices were never addressed
The effects of Pitru Dosh manifest differently in different families: some face financial ruin, others face childlessness, others face repeated illness, and some face disharmony that seems to come from nowhere.
The Vedic Solution: Pitru Dosh Shanti Puja
The puja directly addresses the root cause by:
Tarpan: Offering sacred water, sesame, and barley to the departed souls, providing them the spiritual nourishment they need to move forward peacefully
Pind Daan: Offering rice balls (Pindas) representing the subtle bodies of the ancestors, helping them transition to higher realms
Narayan Bali: A formal ceremony of offering to departed souls who died untimely or abnormal deaths
Brahmin Bhojan: Feeding Brahmins in the name of ancestors, which directly transfers merit to them
Vishnu Puja: Invoking Lord Vishnu, the protector, to grant peace to the ancestors
Ideal Time for Pitru Dosh Shanti Puja
Pitru Paksha (15-day period before Navratri): The most powerful period for ancestral rites, when the veil between worlds is thinnest
Amavasya (New Moon day): Every month is auspicious for Tarpan and Pitru Puja
Guru Pushya Nakshatra: Especially powerful for ancestral ceremonies
Gaya Pilgrimage timing: If you cannot travel to Gaya, our Pandits perform the equivalent ritual at home
Solar or Lunar eclipses: Extremely powerful for Pitru Tarpan
Step-by-Step Ritual Process
Sankalp: A detailed Sankalp is taken naming as many known ancestors as possible, their relationship to the family, and the specific relief being sought.
Ganapati Puja: Lord Ganesha is invoked first for the removal of obstacles and smooth conduct of the ceremony.
Kalash Sthapana: A sacred water vessel is established, representing the presence of Varuna, the god of cosmic waters who carries offerings to the ancestral realm.
Navagraha Puja: The nine planets are propitiated, with special emphasis on the Sun (Surya, the lord of ancestors) and Rahu (the planet most associated with Pitru Dosh).
Pitru Tarpan: Water mixed with sesame seeds (til) and barley (jau) is offered in both hands (Anjali) toward the south (the direction of ancestors), with specific mantras naming each known ancestor. Three Anjalis are offered per ancestor.
Pind Daan: Rice balls mixed with sesame, honey, and milk are prepared and offered on banana leaves with specific Pitru mantras. This nourishes the subtle bodies of the departed.
Vishnu Sahasranama or Narayan Stotra: Lord Vishnu's thousand names are chanted, invoking his power to liberate the ancestors from any karmic bondage.
Havan: A sacred fire ritual with Pitru-specific offerings (sesame, barley, and specific herbs) is performed to transform the offerings and deliver them to the ancestral realm.
Brahmin Dana: Clothes, food, or money are donated in the name of specific ancestors as a final act of merit transfer.
Aarti and Visarjan: The ceremony concludes with Aarti and the offering's immersion in flowing water.
