Pitru Paksha Shradh Puja
There are fifteen days in the Hindu calendar that belong entirely to the ancestors. Not to the living. Not to the gods. To the departed souls of our family. Pitru Paksha, the fortnight of the ancestors, falls in the dark half of Bhadrapada month (September-October) and is considered the most potent period of the year for ancestral rites, offering, and liberation. The Garuda Purana states that during Pitru Paksha, the gates between the ancestral realm and the earthly realm are opened, and the souls of our ancestors come closer to receive our offerings, our prayers, and our love.
Pitru Paksha Shradh Puja is the complete ancestral rite performed on the specific Tithi (date) corresponding to the deceased person's death date. Each day of Pitru Paksha corresponds to a Tithi: the Shradh performed on the Tritiya (3rd day) is for those who died on the 3rd of any lunar month, the Panchami Shradh is for those who died on the 5th, and so on. The Mahalaya Amavasya (last day) is the most powerful day, when Shradh for all ancestors is accepted regardless of their specific Tithi.

Step-by-Step Pitru Paksha Shradh Ritual Process
Sankalp: Detailed declaration naming all known ancestors by name, relationship, and the specific Tithi being observed.
Ganesh Puja: Even in Pitru ceremonies, Ganesha is worshipped first.
Vishnu Puja: Lord Vishnu as the protector and liberator of souls.
Pitru Tarpan: Three rounds of Anjali water offering with sesame and barley in the south direction, once for each generation.
Pind Daan: Rice balls with sesame, honey, and milk offered on Kusha grass with specific Pitru mantras.
Brahmin Bhojan: The Pandit (representing the ancestors) is offered a full meal or the equivalent as Dana.
