Vehicle Puja (Car/Bike)
The moment you bring home a new car or bike in Pune, there is a particular stillness in the air before the first key turn. In Hindu tradition, that moment belongs to the divine. A vehicle is not merely a machine of steel and fuel. It carries you through every commute, every long drive to your parents' village, every late-night hospital emergency, every joyful pilgrimage. The Vedic tradition recognizes this and prescribes the Vahana Puja, a sacred ceremony to invoke divine protection upon the vehicle and its passengers before the first journey begins.
Families across Baner, Wakad, Hadapsar, and Kharadi perform this ceremony every Dhanteras, Dussehra, or on the day of a new vehicle purchase. It takes barely an hour, costs almost nothing in comparison, and carries the spiritual conviction that when you place your vehicle under divine care, journeys become safer.

The Vedic Significance of Vahana Puja
In ancient India, warriors performed puja of their horses and chariots before battle. Farmers performed puja of their bullock carts before harvest season. The Vedic view is clear: any vehicle that supports human life and movement deserves acknowledgment and sacred protection.
The Vehicle Puja invokes primarily Lord Ganesha (for obstacle removal), Lord Vishwakarma (the divine engineer and protector of all tools and machines), and sometimes Lord Hanuman (for protection on the road, especially for long-distance drivers). In Maharashtra, many families also offer prayer to the local Gramdevata or Kuladevi before the vehicle's first journey.
The puja removes the Nazar (evil eye) from the vehicle, consecrates it with positive vibrations, and formally places it under divine protection. There is a practical psychological benefit too: a family that has performed Vahana Puja drives with greater care and reverence, treating the vehicle as a responsibility rather than a toy.
Ideal Time (Muhurat) for Vehicle Puja
The most auspicious occasions for Vehicle Puja include:
Dhanteras (the day before Diwali): Considered the absolute best day for purchasing and worshipping vehicles and tools
Dussehra (Vijayadashami): The legendary day on which Rama defeated Ravana; weapons and vehicles are worshipped across India
Vishwakarma Jayanti: The birthday of the divine craftsman, especially auspicious for machines and vehicles
The day of vehicle purchase: Any Shubh Muhurat chosen from the Panchang, avoiding Rahu Kaal, Gulika Kaal, and Yamaghanta
Akshaya Tritiya: Brings lasting prosperity to new possessions
Our Pandits calculate a personalized auspicious time for your vehicle puja based on the owner's Rashi and the day's Panchang.
Step-by-Step Vehicle Puja Process
Cleaning and Decoration: The vehicle is thoroughly washed and decorated with a fresh marigold garland on the front. A small swastika is drawn with Kumkum on the hood.
Sankalp: The Pandit takes the formal sankalp stating the owner's name, gotra, the vehicle's details, and the intention: safe journeys and protection of all passengers.
Ganesh Puja: Lord Ganesha is invoked first, as always, to remove obstacles from all journeys this vehicle will undertake.
Vishwakarma Puja: The divine craftsman is worshipped for blessing the vehicle's mechanical integrity and longevity.
Kalash Sthapana: A sacred Kalash (water vessel) is established near the vehicle, representing the presence of the divine during the ceremony.
Nazar Utarna: The evil eye (Nazar) is removed from the vehicle using a rotating camphor flame and black mustard seeds, protecting it from jealous gazes.
Mantra Jaap: Specific protective mantras from the Vedas are chanted while circumambulating the vehicle. The Hanuman Chalisa is often recited for road protection.
Coconut Breaking: A coconut is broken on the ground near the vehicle's front wheel, a traditional act of Nazar removal and auspicious beginning.
Lemon and Chilli Charm: A string of 7 green chillies and 1 lemon is tied under the vehicle (or hung at the front) as a traditional protection against Nazar.
Aarti and Blessing: Aarti is performed for the vehicle. The first ignition is then done with the Pandit's guidance, often while chanting a specific mantra.
First Journey Blessing: The owner performs a short auspicious first drive in an eastward or northward direction, symbolizing the beginning of a blessed journey.
