According to the Vastu Shastra, every plot of land has a Vastu Purusha, a divine being that lies with his head in the northeast and his feet in the southwest. The layout of every building must respect his posture. Before disturbing the earth with construction, the Vastu Purusha must be formally requested to cooperate, and any existing negative energies in the soil (from previous structures, deaths, conflicts, or natural accumulations) must be cleansed.

Step-by-Step Bhoomi Pujan Ritual Process
Site Survey and Sanctification: The Pandit surveys the plot for energy disturbances. The site is swept clean and purified with Gangajal.
Sankalp: A formal Sankalp is taken in the name of the landowner, stating the purpose (construction of a home/office/factory), the exact location, and the family's gotra.
Ganapati Puja: Lord Ganesha is invoked to remove all obstacles from the construction process, from permits and finances to weather and labor.
Bhoomi Devi Puja: The Earth Goddess is formally invoked with the Prithvi Sukta mantras. A symbolic apology is offered for the disturbance about to be made, and her blessings are sought.
Vastu Purusha Mandal: A sacred geometric diagram representing the Vastu Purusha is drawn on the ground. The nine zones of the plot are identified and honored.
Kshetrapal Puja: The guardian deity of the specific land area is propitiated to ensure peaceful and cooperative energy from the land's existing spiritual occupants.
Navagraha Puja: The nine planets are invoked to ensure favorable cosmic influences during and after construction.
Pratham Khanan (First Digging): The head of the family (or the senior-most person present) performs the symbolic first digging with a golden shovel or clean iron tool, while the Pandit chants the Bhoomi Pujan mantras. Five holes are dug, in the northeast, northwest, southeast, southwest, and center of the plot.
Neev Sthapana (Foundation Laying): A small amount of gold, silver, copper, or at minimum five grains, are placed in the northeast hole. This is the spiritual foundation of the entire structure.
Havan (Vastu Homa): A sacred fire is lit at the center of the plot. 108 offerings of ghee, rice, sesame, and specific Vastu herbs are made with the Vastu Purusha mantras. The fire's energy consecrates the entire site.
Aarti and Prasad: The ceremony concludes with an Aarti to Bhoomi Devi and distribution of Prasad among all present, workers, engineers, family members.
