The Significance of Visarjan
The Visarjan is not merely about immersing an idol in water. The water represents the cosmic ocean from which all creation emerged and into which it returns. By immersing Ganesha in water, the family symbolically releases him back to his cosmic origin, having received his blessings and his grace during his earthly visit. The clay of which he is made returns to the earth. The prana (divine consciousness) that was invoked during Sthapana is ceremonially withdrawn through the Udvasan mantra.
Step-by-Step Ganesh Visarjan Ritual Process
- Final Shodashopachara Puja: A complete set of sixteen offerings is made to Ganesha one last time.
- Final Modak Bhog and Durva Archana: Last offering of Modak and 21 Durva sprouts.
- Ganesh Atharvashirsha: Final recitation of the Upanishad.
- Aarti: Final Sukhakarta Dukhaharta Aarti.
- Sankalp for Next Year: The family takes a formal intention to welcome Ganesha back the following year.
- Udvasan: The Pandit performs the Udvasan mantra, formally and lovingly withdrawing Lord Ganesha's presence from the idol while requesting him to remain in the family's hearts.
- Procession Preparation: The idol is prepared for the procession with a final garland and tilak.
- Farewell Chanting: Ganpati Bappa Morya is chanted 21 times as the idol is carried out.
- Visarjan at Water Body or Bucket: For eco-friendly celebration, families may use a bucket of water at home; the Pandit guides this alternative with the same mantras.
- Post-Visarjan Prasad: The final prasad of Modak and sweets is distributed to neighbors and friends.
