The first time solid food touches a baby's lips is not merely a feeding milestone. In the Vedic tradition, it is a sacred threshold. The child moves from the purely sattvic nourishment of mother's milk to the world of earth's food, a transition that is simultaneously physical, spiritual, and cosmic. Annaprashan Sanskar, the ceremony of the first solid feeding, is the sixth of the sixteen Samskaras and is performed with deep intention: to invoke the blessings of the Earth, the food deities, and the family's ancestors upon the child's digestive health, physical growth, and long life.
The word Annaprashna means the introduction of Anna (food). The first morsel fed in this ceremony is not ordinary food. It is a sacred preparation, usually rice cooked with milk, jaggery, ghee, and honey, offered first to the family deity, then to the child's lips by the father or maternal uncle in the specific traditional manner prescribed by the family's gotra and tradition.

The Significance of Annaprashan
The Grihya Sutras specify that Annaprashan should be performed before the child's first teeth emerge, while the digestive system is still forming, to ensure that the child's relationship with food begins on an auspicious note. The puja specifically invokes:
Anna Devata: The deity of food, for digestive health and nourishment
Prithvi (Earth): The source of all food, for physical strength and growth
Surya Dev: For the vital energy that digests and transforms food
Family Kuldevi: The ancestral deity's blessing for healthy development
One beloved tradition in many Maharashtrian and North Indian families is the Prophecy Game: after the feeding, various objects are placed before the child (a pen, soil, coins, a book) and whichever the child reaches for first is taken as a playful prediction of their career or life inclination.
Ideal Time for Annaprashan Sanskar
Between 6th and 8th month for boys, 5th or 7th month for girls (some traditions)

Step-by-Step Annaprashan Ritual Process
Purification: The ceremony space is decorated with flowers and rangoli. The baby is dressed in new clothes.
Sankalp: The Pandit takes Sankalp with the baby's birth details, stating the auspicious intention of the feeding ceremony.
Ganesh Puja: Lord Ganesha is worshipped for obstacle-free digestive health.
Navagraha Puja: Nine planets are propitiated for the baby's overall health and development.
Anna Devata Puja: The sacred rice preparation is placed on the altar and offered to the food deity with specific Annaprashan mantras.
Surya Puja: Invoking solar energy for strong digestion.
Sacred Rice Preparation: Rice cooked in milk and sweetened with jaggery and honey is prepared and blessed by the Pandit.
First Feeding Ritual: The father places a small amount of the sacred rice on the tip of his finger or a silver spoon and feeds it to the baby while the Pandit chants "Annaprashan Mantra."
Prophecy Game (optional): Various objects are placed before the child after the feeding.
Ayushya Suktam: Long-life Vedic hymns are chanted over the child.
Aarti and Blessings: The baby is blessed by all elders present and Aarti is performed.
