Ganesh Visarjan Puja
If the Ganesh Sthapana was the joyful arrival, the Ganesh Visarjan is the bittersweet farewell. And in Pune, it is the farewell that the entire city comes out to witness. The procession of Ganesh Visarjan on the 10th day (Anant Chaturdashi) is one of the most spectacular religious events in the world, with millions of devotees accompanying their beloved Bappa to the nearest water body, chanting Ganpati Bappa Morya, Pudchya Varshi Lavkar Ya (Ganpati Bappa, come back soon next year) in a collective outpouring of devotion and love.
But before the idol is carried out to the water, a final, complete Visarjan Puja must be performed in the home. This is the Uttara Puja, the farewell ceremony, in which the family seeks Lord Ganesha's continued blessings, requests his permission to bid him farewell, and performs the Udvasan ritual to thank him for his presence and invite him to return the following year.
This ceremony, when performed properly, creates a beautiful emotional and spiritual closure to the festival. It transforms the sadness of Ganesha's departure into a joyful anticipation of his return. Families across Baner, Kharadi, Hadapsar, and Viman Nagar perform this ceremony with our Pandits to ensure Ganesha's departure is as auspicious and complete as his arrival.

The Significance of Visarjan
The Visarjan is not merely about immersing an idol in water. The water represents the cosmic ocean from which all creation emerged and into which it returns. By immersing Ganesha in water, the family symbolically releases him back to his cosmic origin, having received his blessings and his grace during his earthly visit. The clay of which he is made returns to the earth. The prana (divine consciousness) that was invoked during Sthapana is ceremonially withdrawn through the Udvasan mantra.
Step-by-Step Ganesh Visarjan Ritual Process
Final Shodashopachara Puja: A complete set of sixteen offerings is made to Ganesha one last time.
Final Modak Bhog and Durva Archana: Last offering of Modak and 21 Durva sprouts.
Ganesh Atharvashirsha: Final recitation of the Upanishad.
Aarti: Final Sukhakarta Dukhaharta Aarti.
Sankalp for Next Year: The family takes a formal intention to welcome Ganesha back the following year.
Udvasan: The Pandit performs the Udvasan mantra, formally and lovingly withdrawing Lord Ganesha's presence from the idol while requesting him to remain in the family's hearts.
Procession Preparation: The idol is prepared for the procession with a final garland and tilak.
Farewell Chanting: Ganpati Bappa Morya is chanted 21 times as the idol is carried out.
Visarjan at Water Body or Bucket: For eco-friendly celebration, families may use a bucket of water at home; the Pandit guides this alternative with the same mantras.
Post-Visarjan Prasad: The final prasad of Modak and sweets is distributed to neighbors and friends.
