Amavasya Shradh
Amavasya, the New Moon day, is considered the most sacred day of the month for ancestral rites in the Vedic tradition. Every Amavasya is a day when the veil between the living and the ancestral realm becomes thinner, when the departed souls are said to be closest to their living descendants, and when Tarpan (sacred water offering) and Pind Daan reach the ancestors with the greatest clarity and potency. Of the twelve Amavasyas in a year, each has its own significance, but all are accepted as valid and auspicious for Shradh.
Amavasya Shradh is a monthly observance that families can perform to maintain a regular ancestral connection rather than waiting for the annual Pitru Paksha or the specific death anniversary date. It is particularly beneficial for families where the exact death Tithi of ancestors is unknown, where ancestral rites were missed for several years, or where the family is currently experiencing Pitru Dosh effects and needs to establish a regular remedial practice.
Many families in Pune who have moved away from their villages, lost access to ancestral records, or converted from non-Hindu backgrounds and wish to reconnect with ancestral traditions, perform Amavasya Shradh as their primary ancestral rite. Our Pandits understand these modern realities and approach the ceremony with compassion and practical wisdom.
