Pitru Tarpan Puja
Of all the ancestral rites in the Vedic tradition, Pitru Tarpan is the most direct, the most accessible, and the most regularly performed. Tarpan means satisfaction, from the root word Tarp meaning to satisfy or to quench. The ritual is exactly that: an offering of sacred water, sesame seeds, and barley toward the south (the direction of the ancestors) to quench the subtle thirst of the departed souls and satisfy them with the most fundamental of all offerings, water.
Water is life. In the Vedic understanding, even in the realm of the ancestors, the departed souls require nourishment. Physical food cannot reach them, but the subtle essence of sacred water offered with specific mantras, through the correct mudra of Pitru Tirtha, and in the correct direction, does reach them. Tarpan is this offering, and it is one of the simplest acts of profound love that a person can offer to their deceased family members.
Pitru Tarpan Puja, as offered by our Pandits, is the formalized version of this practice, performed with the complete protocol of Gotra declaration, Tithi-specific mantras, and proper ceremony for maximum effectiveness. It is both the simplest and one of the most deeply moving of all ancestral ceremonies.

The Correct Method: Why a Pandit Matters
Pitru Tarpan seems simple but has specific requirements that determine its effectiveness:
Direction: Must face south (Yama's direction) or toward flowing water
Mudra: The offering must be made from the Pitru Tirtha (the space between thumb and index finger), not the Deva Tirtha (used for deity offerings)
Gotra Declaration: Each Anjali must name the ancestor's name, relationship, and gotra
Number of Anjalis: Three per ancestor for Pitru-side, three for Matri-side
Sesame and Barley: Must be mixed with water in the correct proportion
Mantra: Specific Pitru mantras must accompany each Anjali
Without these elements, the offering, though sincere, may not reach its intended recipients with full effectiveness. Our Pandits ensure every element is correctly performed.
Step-by-Step Pitru Tarpan Puja Process
Preparation: The person performing Tarpan wears clean white or dhoti. A copper vessel filled with clean water is prepared.
Sankalp: Complete declaration of all known ancestors by name and relationship.
Ganesh Puja: Brief Ganesh worship.
Pitru Ahvan: Formal invitation of ancestors into the ritual space.
Sesame Water Preparation: Black sesame and barley are mixed into the water with specific mantras.
Paternal Line Tarpan: Three Anjali offerings for each known father, grandfather, and great-grandfather while chanting their names.
Maternal Line Tarpan: Three Anjali offerings for maternal grandfather and ancestors.
Unknown Ancestors Tarpan: A final set of Anjalis for all unknown ancestors.
Vishnu Smaran: Vishnu's name chanted for liberation of all souls.
Crow Feeding (Kak Bali): Food offered to crows near water.
Pitru Stotram: Short ancestral hymns recited.
