Tithi Shradh (Annual Shradh)
Every year, on the exact lunar date on which a family member passed away, the Vedic tradition prescribes a specific and complete Shradh ceremony. This is the Tithi Shradh, also called Varshik Shradh or Annual Shradh. It is the yearly commemoration and renewal of the family's ancestral connection, performed on the same Tithi each year without fail.
In the Vedic understanding, the soul of the deceased inhabits a realm governed by its own form of time, which does not move with the solar year but with the lunar calendar. On the anniversary Tithi, the departed soul is said to be especially receptive to offerings, prayers, and the love of the living family members. Performing the Tithi Shradh on this day is considered one of the most powerful acts of familial love and spiritual responsibility that a child can perform for a parent, and that a person can perform for any beloved family member who has passed.

What Is the Tithi Shradh?
The Tithi Shradh is not the same as Pitru Paksha Shradh. While Pitru Paksha Shradh is performed during the specific 15-day ancestral period, the Tithi Shradh is performed on the exact death anniversary date throughout the year. Many families perform both — the Tithi Shradh on the death anniversary and the Pitru Paksha Shradh during the ancestral fortnight.
The ceremony includes Pind Daan (rice ball offering), Pitru Tarpan (water offering), Brahmin Bhojan (feeding a Brahmin representing the ancestor), and specific Pitru mantras that directly nourish the subtle body of the departed soul.

Step-by-Step Tithi Shradh Ritual Process
Sankalp: The deceased person's full name, relationship, approximate death date, and gotra are declared with the Pandit.
Ganesh Puja: Obstacle-removing worship.
Pitru Sthapana: The presence of the ancestor is formally invited into the ritual space.
Pitru Tarpan: Three Anjali water offerings with sesame and barley, facing south.
Pind Daan: Rice balls offered on Kusha grass with Pitru mantras.
Brahmin Bhojan: The Pandit is offered a complete meal or its equivalent as Dana.
Cow, Crow, Dog and Ant Feeding: Traditional five-way offering.
Vishnu Smaran: Vishnu's name is chanted for the soul's liberation.
Pitru Sukta: The Vedic hymns dedicated to the ancestors are recited.
Dana: Appropriate items like clothing or utensils are donated in the deceased's name.
